Playing with Sergei, Martha and the others

Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, 2025

Forsythe/Hauert, Neue Werke. In May 2025 the ensemble of Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company is dedicated to the demanding improvisation techniques of two guest choreographers.

William Forsythe is back. After 10 years, the internationally renowned choreographer returns to his longtime artistic workplace, creating a new piece for the ensemble of the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company. In the second part of this double bill, Thomas Hauert immerses himself in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, bringing the dancers into a playful dialogue with this virtuosic and intricate musical masterpiece.

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto is known as one of the most demanding works for pianists. In his new creation for DFDC, Thomas Hauert brings the 1982 recording by Martha Argerich to the stage. The dancers dive into the music, engaging in a playful and physical dialogue shaped by rhythm, dynamics and emotional contrast. Drawing from over 25 years of improvisation practice with his company ZOO, Hauert emphasizes collective intelligence over control.
